Bug Bite Home Remedies

Bug bites are annoying and some can be dangerous. And, let’s face it, no matter how clean your home is, you will at some point get bitten by an ant, mosquito or other pest.

Though most people know about using ice to numb the skin and reduce inflammation, it doesn’t seem to work for me.

Basil – Chopped up fine, you can rub it over mosquite bites to reduce itching.
You can also mix an 1/2 ounce with 2 cups of hot water to make a dried rub.

Essential Oils. Lavender oil relieves pain from spider bites and bee stings.

Mint oil has cooling properties and may help keep insects away. Essential oils extremely useful for painful fire ant bites.

You should not apply essential oils directly to the skin; instead mix them into sprays or balms.

Aloe vera gel helps to sooth inflamed skin and is also a moisturizer. Since aloe vera extract has an antibacterial property, it may also help insect bites from becoming infected.

This unique gel can be purchased or used directly from the aloe vera plant by breaking off a small piece.

Honey

Honey is an anti-inflammatory and has antibacterial properties. Put a small amount on sings and bites to reduce swelling, itching and redness.

Oatmeal. An Oatmeal bath helps with itchy skin. If you have mosquito, flies or ant bites, sprinkle some oatmeal in a tub of water and soak for at least 20 minutes.

You can also make a paste from oatmeal and water and apply directly to each bite or sting.

An onion of any variety may help to reduce irritation and pain on some bug bites.

Onions have anti-fungal properties and may help to reduce the risk of an infection.

Just slice it and apply to the bite for a few minutes. Be sure to wash your skin afterward.

Lemon or Lime Juice

Lemon or lime juice can help to reduce pain from bug bites. The juice also works well to stop itching from mosquito bites.

However, do not apply lemon or lime juice to bites you have already scratched as this will sting.

And, another word of caution, do not sit in the sun after applying lemon or lime juice to your skin, as this may cause sunburn.
